Introduction
to TPMS
(Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems) WHAT
IS TPMS? WHY
TPMS? 1) Safety. The USA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as well as European (EU) and Australian Road Safety organisations, have identified that tyre pressure and tyre failure is a significant factor in vehicle accidents. Low tyre pressure will lead to premature tyre failure. It has been found that most drivers do not check tyre pressures at sufficiently regular intervals and as a result an unacceptable number of vehicles are being driven on the road with under-inflated tyres. A report prepared by Road Safety Solutions for the "Heads of compulsory Third Party insurance in Australia and New Zealand" in 2007 looked at studies carried out in the UK and USA which found that the number of vehicles on the roads, to have at least one tyre under inflated, to be as high as 72%. The report looked at the 1993 NRMA studies in Australia that found only 17% of tyres to be correctly inflated. It goes into detailed analyses of the "Safety Consequences of Under-Inflated Tyres". Even without such studies it is easy to see that an under-inflated tyre will result in reduced vehicle handling, increased braking distance and increased likelihood of a blowout. 2) The Environment. Under-inflated tyres have a detrimental environmental effect. Under-inflated tyres cause an increase in wheel roll friction. This increases vehicle fuel consumption. The increase in friction also contributes to increased tyre wear that is also detrimental to the environment. This is not an unsubstantiated statement made merely benefit our cause. Tyre pressure is so detrimental to safety and CO2 emission that the US congress has passed legislation that mandates that all passenger cars, trucks, multipurpose vehicle, buses with gross vehicle rating of 10,000 pounds or less (except with dual wheels on an axle) must have Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems fitted to all vehicles manufactured or sold within the USA after September 1, 2007. 3)
Cost Saving. A TPMS
